We are committed to the delivery of good quality community development work, to sharing good practice around engaging communities and supporting appropriate training in localities. We provide a range of training programmes and consultancy services for this exciting area of work.
Working in Community – Organisation, Development and Engagement (C-ODE)
Our popular training course ‘Working in C-ODE’ is for anyone working in communities and wanting a level 2 or 3 qualification in Community Development.
It is for people
* in paid work or volunteering
* actively involved in community development,
* in voluntary and community organisations, statutory bodies or businesses.
C-ODE is a one year training course, developed by TDC, for people who would like to improve the effectiveness of their community work using a community development (CD) approach.
Completion of the course will lead to either a Level 2 or Level 3 nationally recognised qualification: Certificate in Community Development, accredited by Certa. This Certificate course is aimed at enhancing the skills, knowledge and understanding of people practising CD in a wide range of contexts.
‘Working in C-ODE’ will support you to develop practical and analytical skills to work with a range of communities. You will gain an understanding of community development values and purpose, work with community groups and the diversity of communities as well as skills in community development practice – inclusive group work, assessing community needs and reflective practice.

Working With Communities
Over the past six years we have developed a very successful community engagement training course, delivered by in-house trainers and external consultants. The course is relevant to voluntary and statutory sector organisation’s as well as local community groups and it encourages effective community engagement, experiential learning and improved understanding of cross-sector working and partnerships. We have worked with Brighton & Hove City Council to deliver community engagement courses over the last few years. We have also run a youth engagement training course at Sussex Central YMCA.
This course is particularly focused on the role of teams, leaders and trustees when working with communities.

This is an action-focused learning course delivered over one full-day and two follow-up half-day sessions. Created out of the issues brought by learners, it is tailored to specifically meet the needs of attendees so it is all relevant to the work of participants. Participants so far have worked on a range of projects including:
- Outreach about a volunteer support for parents of children with special needs (Voluntary Organisation)
- Support to develop a ‘Friends of’ Parks group (Community group)
- Training volunteers to lead skateboarding sessions (Sports Development in the Council)
- Influencing parking consultation (Parking Services in the Council)
- Engagement events with BME and disabled groups around waste, parks, highways and parking (City Clean)
- Developing a small Community Groups Network (Local CVS)
- Crime prevention for Council day services (Police and Council)
- Promoting safety messages through community networks (Fire and Rescue Service)
