Portland Road and Clarendon

Our current work programme for 2010 will support the annual three week long Community Festival held in Stoneham Park, work with the Vallance Community Centre to open up their IT facilities and support production of the community newspaper, The Vallance News. We will continue to support and develop the Portland Road and Clarendon Neighbourhood Forum.
- Opening of The Park Café
- Initial development of a Friends of Stoneham Group (now supported by BHCC Rangers Team)
- Appearance of the Portland Road & Clarendon Forum in Idea's National research project ‘Beyond One Voice' as a good practice example of representation
- Supporting PCCS (Poets Corner Community Society) to do an internal review of their systems, structures and finance and to pursue their resulting Business Plan
- Partnership with CUPP (Community University Partnership Programme University of Brighton) in setting up a community information and local consultation
- Work with Vallance Community Centre to organise IT training for drop in centre volunteers and local residents, improving seven older people's IT skills and giving them the confidence to help others to access the Centre's computers. This was paid for by a European Social Fund bid which has also employed a part time volunteer coordinator for the Vallance.
"The local Councillors have worked with Dave Allen for some months now since he took over the role of Community Development Worker and Forum co-ordinator. I have always found Dave very easy to work with and share his clear commitment to the neighbourhood, and to see positive outcomes for all residents. His breadth of interest has been very helpful, and he understands at a detailed level the issues, problems and opportunities that are present in the Portland Rd. and Clarendon neighbourhood.
We look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.
Councillor Brian Oxley
"As ministers of the local Salvation Army, we have always wanted to be 'effective' in our community and the best way of achieving that is to know what is happening, what the needs and concerns are, what else is being
offered and what's not. When we heard that a forum was being set up for groups working in the Portland Road and Clarendon area, we felt it was just what we were looking for[…]. The sharing of needs and concerns led to us starting a Youth club on a Friday night; the forum has also been a means of groups supporting one another, particularly with agreeing to the spending of grants and funds - we were very pleased to be the recipients of at least two pots of money! But mainly we have been pleased to be able to join with other groups who attend and try to achieve good things for this area.
Jo is the best role mode of chairing a meeting, I have ever come across - everyone gets their say, yet we still run to time! Amazing!"
