Our Current Activities:
- The Trust continues to support local community groups, such as the Residents Association, Stanmer and Coldean Local Action Team, Coldean Festival Group and Friends of Coldean Parks.
- Work is in progress to support fundraising for a local park development.
- The Trust is supporting the youth project to build the youth groups' committee and increased community involvement in running of the weekly club.
- Lease been written for youth building, hopefully the keys will be given in 2011.
- A practitioners meeting has been set up to improve communication between service providers in Coldean.
- Committee skills training courses are currently being organised for interested community groups, with the aim of improving coordination between groups, getting more people involved and delegating responsibilities.
We also work at New Larchwood, a sheltered housing project. Click on the New Larchwood link to find out more.
Initiated in 2006 in Coldean by Brighton and Hove City Council, it was rooted on the principles of a strong community involvement and the shaping of the activities carried out in the centre is still a reflection of this.
Achievements:
- Supporting residents to fundraise and organise a Halloween event in Wolseley Road Park.
- Developing community use and involvement with Coldean Library, encouraging new and existing activities: links to youth projects, short courses/IT use, increasing the awareness of local residents about the use of the venue and library services, storytelling, book groups etc.
- Stanmer & Coldean Local Action Team (SCLAT) supported to develop corporate brand, support links with youth project to design SCLAT group logo.
- Support to a new group: Coldean Community Garden Project; which has been formed to develop a Community Garden in Haig Avenue.
Testimonials:
" The TDC and I both arrived in Coldean at roughly the same time, and it has been incredible to see how the Trust has encouraged the community to work together, develop new groups, and look out for those who were on the fringes of the community. When I arrived I felt the community were almost paralysed with lethargy. I frequently heard ‘We’ve tried it before’ and ‘We’re the forgotten estate’. Now the community has a fresh attitude, a more positive outlook and pride in what they do. I’m convinced this is a result of such fantastic community workers, especially Linda Saltwell (who prepared the way) Jenny Moore and Steve Andrews.
Personally I would like to thank the Trust for the help in acquiring the funding to re-furbish our church hall. It is the only hall in Coldean and many more members of the community use it for meetings and parties etc."
